A comparison of the economic results obtained by Holstein steer calves with different feedlot arrival body weights

ABSTRACT: The study compared the economic results between five groups of Holstein steers with different arrival body weights (ABW) but similar ages in feedlot. average ABW were 105, 112, 117, 123 and 129 kg (30, 90, 87, 60, 30 calves, respectively) an age 113 ± 1d. calves randomly distributed using unbalanced design. weighed upon at feedlot subsequently on days 224, 361 study. fed a steam- flaked corn-based diets. A receiving diet (2.21 Mcal NEm/kg DM) was provided during initial 112 feeding. From day until harvest all received finishing (2.27 DM). Because two diets used, partial (day 1 to 361), one full period (day1 361) feeding periods evaluated. Statistical differences final observed, which allowed profit estimation, obtained by subtracting purchase cost plus total feed from revenue sale steers. Overall weight gain intake higher increased ABW, efficiency better for intermediate (112 117 kg), being most profitable (USD 15.8 more than Kg. group)
